Pretty cool find. I know nothing about buttons, Civil War or otherwise, but I'd be happy with finding one. Keep searching that backyard.

Very cool... is there any chance you can read the words on the back (the backmark)? That will help determine when it was made and by whom it was made. If there is NO backmark, that is also helpfull...

Let us know...

See this site, it shows many variations on the navy button... can you find the one closest to yours? http://www.thetreasuredepot.com/cayenna/index.html

BTW... welcome to TreasureNet!

Nice find! I actually dug my first military button yesterday too, you can view my post at "first time at my 1800's property" thread. Mine was all crusty on back too and I cleaned it up with small fine brass wire brush and some dish detergent. It cleaned up nice and the words "horstmann Philadelphia" appeared (circa. 1893-1935). Good luck in your research!
