I found what appears to be a steatite tablet or metate on a. hike today, at first i noticed the abalone shells sticking out from a wash after the rain. then i noticed the unnatural corner of the metate and dug it out. when i cleaned it i noticed a small incised groove that resembled an arrow shaft straightner on the underside. the tongva would often do this to broken mortats and other steatite tools.

Aside from that i also found two abalone pries, asphaltum with shell fragments stuck in it, and a couple of hammer stones.

Anymore information on what this tablet might be woulkd be greatly appreciated, looking forward to the feedback!

Hello there. The steatite piece looks like a rim fragment from a vessel. It is way too soft of a material to be a metate. Nice finds and keep searching the area, may be more fragments to finds. Welcome to the site.
