I have been detecting for seven years, I've dug a zillion buttons, many old Customs buttons. I have dreamed of digging a North West Mounted Police button since day one. Today it finally happened, and four of them! It's been a while since I had a dug item really stall my brain out and leave me slack jawed haha.

The NWMP formed in 1873 and existed with that title until 1903. In 1874 287 officers made the famous ride West through these parts. This is the outer fringes of the oldest of the old for my area. Not many officers, and for a relatively short time. The land owner told me he knows exactly where a small group of officers camped, not far from the farm where I found these buttons. Can't wait to check it out.

I just gently dry brushed them, no water. The image of the Buffalo face is really cool. Thanks for looking ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1464500035.159118.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1464500186.193700.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1464500226.619153.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1464500252.900507.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1464500277.840084.jpg

Nice job. I don't recall ever seeing one posted.
Glad you got some nice ones, even though the poorest one is still a good find, it is nice to have better looking ones for the "good case"
The whole coat must be there, and you could possibly get some more yet.
Looks like your getting your first banner.

Thank you Rick, I haven't ever seen one posted before either.

I found them actually not terribly close together, in the area between the homestead and where I was told they camped.

The landowner told me the small group of NWMP camped just across the ravine, and were friendly with his relatives. His great grandfather would invite them for supper, they would decline, he would insist, they would give in and come to the house and dine. They weren't there long, but they developed a good relationship. When they left, they gifted the great grandfather a NWMP Buffalo coat. It's still in the family, so these buttons are not from that coat. Also, I've noticed three variations. The bottom left and top right are different from each other, and different from the other three.

Sorry for the long winded reply but I thought it was interesting.

Super cool pieces of history buddy. Banner from me. If the northern boys say they're this special they need to be up there

Thank you Abe, I'm blown away with all the responses. For me in my area, I don't think I could ever find better buttons.

THATS SOME NICE BUTTONS.

You got my banner vote...

I'm also a bit late to the party, but a huge congratulations on a well deserved banner with some killer buttons. I didn't know much about them until I saw this post. Excellent job on brushing them off... I really like the patina and contrast on those.
