found my first indian head penny last night

good morning, just wanted to share that i found my very first indian head penny last night dating to 1881. i also found 7 super x .22 shorts and a few clad coins. i found all this stuff in my front yard which is a house that dates to 1900. i have also found many other things in that same front yard including some wheat penny other various junk some old axe heads and a 1930's makeup compact. Going back out tonight hopefully find some more good stuff. thanks, nick

Nice first IHC. Depth is sometimes surprising. I dug a cob 3" down once. You just never know so it's always good to dig everything.

Congrats

ya it was a surprise but all the wheat and the one indian i found were pretty close to the top. i think it is because were i found them were really close to the road and after winter it gets pretty muddy there and we park there so it very well could have been pushed up i will be back out in the same spot tonight as i have dug this area 3 times now and something usually pops up so i will continue to dig.

Welcome and congrats on your first IHP. Now slow down and dig every signal in your yard. Especially after a rain or watering. Best of luck, Sub 8-)

Congrats on your IHP find!!! I have been just detecting for a little over a year now (even though I joined my dad on his metal detecting hunts in the 80's) and I remember the excitement of when I found my first Indian head penny last year! Congrats and good luck on many new first finds!!!

Congratulations, it won't be long before you find something from the 1700's. Welcome to treasure net.

thank you everyone. ok so i do have a question every once in a while i will be detecting and swing and here a single tone and i will search back over the same spot and still only get a single tone in one direction instead of a double tone as i pass back and forth over the target what should i do about those should i dig them or would i be wasting my time. i apologize if im not using the correct terminology there.

tomhighland i would love to find something that old i might in due time. i would really like to try and get permission to dig around the center of town as it does have some good history from the early 1800's. i guess it had a huge hotel griss mills blacksmiths, general store etc. etc. it was a stopping place for people running back and forth between the towns surrounding us

If you are at a potentially good spot I would disturb the ground a bit and try again. If the ground is soft enough you can do so with your shoe. If not, dig around a bit and sweep again. Eventually it will either disappear completely or give you a clear reading. Some of my best finds have started off as "iffy" targets.
