I've found a few plow points over the years, but they're always broken. But I found one today that appears to be unbroken. It's 14 inches long, weighs over 5 1/2 pounds and has "E 3" embossed on it. Any ideas as to how old and who made it would be appreciated.

Nice find for sure.
I live on the northern edge of a small city, ( population in 2016 was 215,472 ), and just for the heck of it I took my metal detector out and went over my back yard and got a hit. It was about 2-3 inches down and it was also a plow blade, it was still stuck in a tree root. I dug up the root and left the blade intact in it. It had to be over 100 years that this area was farmland.

I'm guessing this spot hasn't been farmed for a good 100 years. No open spaces at all. Trees have overtaken every square inch of this land. And it's full of oxen shoes, but zero horseshoes. Oxen were used as work animals around here in the 1800's, but not as much in the 1900's.

The only coins I've found there have been from 1816 to 1893. That's another sign that it hasn't been farmed for a long time. Too bad there isn't a manufacturer's name on the point. Would have helped me to pin a date on it. Still a cool find in my book, though.

Lovely piece of iron you have there Tim. I don't recall ever digging one like it. Just guessing i would think post civil war perhaps 1870's? The other finds from your sight probably are a fair estimate for dating it. I do love old agricultural iron. It's our hard working heritage and makes for a cool wall hanger.
