UPDATED see reply
Was walking the dog in the woods and came across this old tank on top of a hill. There are four old concrete anchors on the ground nearby that have square holes in the top. In the center of them is a pipe sticking up out of the ground. About 20 feet away is a concrete foundation about 6 inches high. The concrete is that old kind made with a lot of pebbles and rocks. There are anchor bolts sticking out of the foundation that have square nuts on them. The foundation is about 30' x 15' and is divided about one 3rd of the way. In the bigger part there is a square that I am guessing was the fireplace or a chimney for a stove or a drain. Any thoughts on what it could have been? About 50 yards from the tank is whats left of a stone foundation home with the bottom half of a stone chimney. There is a bunch of old rusty metal cans and threaded lid glass jars and bottles laying around everywhere. You can also make out a very old, overgrown road or driveway with more rusty cans and glass littered about. Any ideas?

This place was a good 30 minute brisk walk (dog pulling me) from where I parked my car. The next time I go back I will get some more pictures.

NA that tank is big enough to park a small car in. I am thinking water or a dairy.

Is there a spring close by? It could be a water tank. I have seen some of these up on the mountain side and it would have a pipe going from the spring to the tank and then to the house. The tank would give them more water pressure at the house. Alabear

This might be odd but try blowing or raking those leaves away and see if anything shows up on the ground.

Yes, I would definitely swing my detector in that area.

Maybe it's connected to a well? Further down the hill there is a sink hole ( I thought it was a cellar hole at first) It has an old clay type pipe (5 or 6 inch diameter)leading into it and one leading out at each end. Looks like the pipe may have broke and the water created the sink hole over time.

if there are lots of maple trees it may be an old sugarbush. they would store maple tree sap until it could be boiled down into syrup or sugar. we did that ourselves one year for fun, it takes alot of sap to make syrup but it sure beats the hell out of store bought syrup.

Re: Found on hilltop in the middle of the forrest

If some one lived near by, well I would guess farm useage. But if there was a house next to the water tank it could just be a garden watering system. But if it was a strip mine they use it to water on the road for less dust to form. The tank would be used to refill water trucks.

I've seen similar in Oregon.....my vote is for an elevated water tank. Used, as has been said, for water pressure.
You are on to a good one. Dig all the signals. You'll do fine in that area.

Looks like an awsome place to detect. I am sure there is plenty of junk, but there are bound to be some great finds. Good luck

Re: Found on hilltop in the middle of the forrest

Had to have taken whomever a few trips up and down the hill to get all the parts of the tank up there, and then assemble it. Soooooo, a lot of activity in that area with bottles and such would suggest a great place to detect. We will be watching further posts about the future finds from this site. Good luck  jgas

Was farmland at the turn of the century.
