Found something.....while panning cons.

I was planning out our cons this past weekend and noticed this little gem (i think) with the black sand. Now that I have found one, I am noticing more of them, always with the black sand cons. Any ideas what this is?

Would help to know where you found it, if you were here in Western North Carolina I would say its a good possibility that it's either is a garnet or ruby.
