It seems kinda soft. Also flakes come off looking like glitter.

Baja, very possible to. As far as I know only grain size sets them apart?
Still have some reading up to do on metamorphic rocks.

Not all geologists are gneiss. Some of us are full of schist.

Since you say 'us' - your a geologist?

No, not a geologist, no piece of paper. I'm just a rock hound. I was trying to be glib and didn't phrase it well.
Phylite is slate trying hard to become schist. We are talking about the same kind of rock, just differing amounts of metamorphosis. Based on these photos, I'm not sure it's possible to call it either way.
I see lots of schist around here. We don't really try to differentiate the exact type. It's just more schist.

Baja,
I see, same here. But I'm a prospector without any papers, lol.
Jupp, we tend to say that if mica flakes/grains can be seen under loupe its closer to schist then phyllite.

Based on that we find quite a bit of phyllite up several miles northwards from my place.
I think we can settle the matter indeed. :)
