Got out to detect for first time this year,went to cellar hole here in North central Mass.,friend made a sifting screen this year to do around the holes if heavy with nails and gave a try and found this marble and thought I would let you all see it.Cellar hole on early 1800s map but no idea about age of these types of marbles.

Scale says 3 grams,not a jewelers scale so not sure how accurate on small items,weighed a newer marble and that comes in at 5 grams.



Wicked cool; but no idea. How heavy is it?

Not perfectly round but close,homemade clay marble?

Yes... it's a clay marble! And a nice one at that. Children's choice prior to the invention of mass produced glass marbles in 1915. That marble was certainly made in the 1800s.

I'm a bit jealous, as I've never found one.

Cool find! It's hard to date clay marbles, they were made by the billions in America from the 1880s until the 1950s. Before that, they were made overseas for centuries.
