Has anybody heard about marketing companies that send detectors to users to evaluate and then keep?

I have heard about this kind of system with tools and fishing gear. You sign up and the company sends you different products to try out, evaluate and then review. Instead of sending it back, you get to keep the item as a thank-you.

Who knows, just a though...

I've noticed that the reviews I've seen in the treasure magazines and the like are written by handful people whose names show up over and over. I think the manufacturers send them the machines to test and write a report on, but don't know if they get to keep them. I have noticed that I've never seen a "bad" review. Makes one wonder about the objectivity of them. Of course, I'm sure that if the people writing them want to continue testing and reporting on the next new model, they aren't likely to write much that's unfavorable. My two bits.
