Re: a find from my earlier days an old WW2 era PBY Seaplane -wrecked sept 17,1944
luckily it was on the surface -- the PBY Catalina --- was from the RAF Squadron 240 --registration number --VA718 --her "pilot officer" was james park 21 years old at the time ---since "K" was the 240's squadron "letter" she was was known as "Katie"-- she was lost by being blown into the shoreline and trees on shore which damaged her wings making her unable to fly while she was at "anchor" in the islands lagoon awaiting refueling ( diego garica, biot) during WW2 on Sept 17,1944 by a strong storm--she was there to do patrols for a suspected japanese submarine that was reportly in the area prowling in the indain ocean and that was headed toward madagascar.---yes thats 23 year old me in the photo == complete with pipe, pith helmet and shorts it was taken back in 1984 if I recall correctly ----Ivan
