It ain't waterproof. The speaker hole will let water in and it will fail. You can submerge the tip and it should work. Minerals in salt water may give it fits as you are saying. I'd suggest putting the tip in the water and turn it on while submerged and see if it's quiet that way.

As for warranty, it's a 2-year limited... If you dunk it, it's yours. Although I have heard Garrett will replace them occasionally because of water damage, but I wouldn't risk it.

Honestly, I'd buy a beach scoop and use it in the water.
