The gear that I pack when ever I go into the woods:
when I'm out in the woods, its usually for 5 or 6 hours.

Backpack contents:
small umbrella (just in-case it rains, I don't want to loose my metal detector)
2 liter of water
wallet / car keys
OFF bug spray
cell phone
video camera
some times a PB&J sandwich.

Wearing:
pinpointer - right rear pocket
digging tool - left rear pocket
finds canvas pouch - around waist
knee pad - left leg
ball cap
leather gloves
Long sleeve shirt, yes even on Memorial Day when it was 80 degrees, the 2 times that I didn't were it, I got poisen ivy bad

and soon a hand held GPS...

Do I need all of this extra weight, no. But I always have what I need.

I use rechargables, I charge them up before I hunt, don't need the spares.

Root saw, keyhole saw, straight blade trimmer saw or equivalent? Eventually you'll get a signal from inside a three inch thick root. Pulled two mercs and a barber dime out of roots in the past myself. Suppose you could go down to the river and hire a beaver to do your root work for you....
