George III 1797 & 1806 Pennies, Musket Ball, Steel Yard Weights...

Hi All,
Did a few lengths on a field at my local farm as I'd gone to collect my eggs and the weather had turned nice for a while.
This, and the field next to it, are pasture fields now but had been ploughed many, many years ago - I shall give them more attention at a later date.
The 1806 George III must have been lost very early in its life as there was so much detail still left on it:

The 1797 Penny - and the Victorian sixpence were very smooth though - hardly any detail left at all:

Found 2 more steel yard weights (found quite a few on this farm already) - pretty old I guess by the colour of the lead - the iron loop deteriorated completely:

And a few other bits and bobs, Musket Ball, 21 new pence (beer money) and a curved but of bronze metal, 7.5cm long hole at each end?

You can't beat farm-fresh eggs!
Get well soon Michael!

Neat finds DavidBeard :icon_thumright:

Kind of curious about the curved piece. How much beer can you get at the local pub for a 20 pence piece ? :D

Added: At first didn't notice you found 21 new 20 pence pieces. Should be enough for a nice cold one :occasion14:

Good job! I found a 1797 cartwheel in worse shape here in the US a couple of years back. I found a coin from four different centuries that day. Still I wish I was detecting in Europe. good hunting, kane 23

Exceptional recoveries, especially the beautiful 1806 KGIII. I can't recall seeing one found in better condition. This may be a dumb question, but what is a yard weight? I found one similar to the one pictured on the left, but had no idea what is was. Steve

Hi Steve,
Yeah, I was shocked at the condition too - like he lost it yesterday!
Here's the Steelyard decription:
...A steelyard balance or steelyard is a straight-beam balance with arms of unequal length. It incorporates a counterweight which slides along the calibrated longer arm to counterbalance the load and indicate its weight. A steelyard is also known as a Roman steelyard, or Roman balance....
More info here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steelyard_balance
They go back years! Could be Roman (hopefully).

Nah - we need at least 10 times that much for a cold one over here!

That's what I thought at first Crusader - bad photo - but when in the right light you can definitely see the young head with the bun. So smooth though, shame.

Forgot to add, I get my eggs from one of the detecting farms as well - very good (lots of breeds including African - so some blue eggs etc..). Totally free-range, as sometimes they get run over by cars, & they roost in the trees to hide from the fox's.

Nice one for sure. Think I have two 1806/07 Georgies that look like that. And many more in the crusty box!
