Out with a new club today and the usual finds appear; 3 buckles, medieval lead token, 4 modern coins, but we were lucky enough to win first place on the raffle. :occasion14:

It was a George III Guinea 1768 although it is a forgery.

As you can see from the photos the gold is wearing thin and revealing silver underneath. It is 22c Gold on top of Silver.

Anyone have any more info on this, I believe there is no silver George III Guinea, Half Guinea or Quarter Guinea so it must have been a blank silver coin stamped.

Awaiting more info from the club but thought we would share with you first.

Never heard of such a thing, they are normally gilt base metal.

Yes, cant find anything at all on the Internet although I was told it tested at 22c Gold (cant confirm yet).

Happy enough its gold plated but the core is normally a copper-alloy. Why waste money on silver??

Yes I suppose, is there any other alternative, would any other metal not have deteriorated in the ground for so long?

I'm not saying it isn't silver because that is what it looks like & any copper & you would see some green. My point is only that I've never heard of them doing this. It could be an extremely rare example, maybe a first??

Sounds good, Ill look into it a bit more if I can, any idea of the value of this coin? it seems a solid 22c gold Guinea would go for around £200-£300.

Now thats a tough question but the US market for these would be 5 times stronger than ours. As I have only seen copper core types sold, I have no reference to base my value. I guess it all hinges on some good research & a good story.

I have acquired more info from the club; It was forged in Holbrook, Derbyshire, silver and gold dipped 22ct. Forger was hung alongside his accomplice from Shottle, Derbyshire. Coin found in Holbrook. Loosely agreed by a museum.

That will help the price.

I think we found a Roman Ounce Weight? Could you confirm?

It is lead with iron broken in the middle, and on the bottom side it is marked with IV.

They didn't use ounces, as far as I remember. Hard to date it, it could be a Roman Steelyard Weight but you can't discount Medieval.

yes they did use Ounces, a Roman ounce was called a Uncia and measured 1⁄12 libra or 27.4g in todays terms, close to our metric ounce.

Although it could be medieval as it states on the finds database, yes you are right.

Close but I thought they didn't match our todays ounce, but its getting hard for me to remember everything I read.

Fascinating find there ! I agree that the info you've already found will enhance the value - especially if there are few or no other existing
pieces .
