Gilt "coin" button-time period?

Finally got back up to new hampshire for a week. I was up for a wedding and had to go out at midnight to detect as it was the only time I had. I was inspired by someone on the site who dug all the large cents up in new england by finding old roads and homesites. I have 25 plus years experience of wandering around my old town, and thinking back to when I was a kid remembered some of the old trails. This trail I imagine was an old carriage road, at least that was my thought. I found this button in about ten minutes at about four inches depth. It says "gilt" on the back up top, and on the bottom something to the effect of ->>٭<<- with the object in the center being a five pointed star.
Any idea of the time period or origen?

This button/backmark appears identical to one illustrated in Tice's book Dating Buttons, and is attributed as, "A late Eighteenth or early Nineteenth [century] button with back stamped by a single die."
