I decided to hunt instead of going to the one day CW show. Glad I did. Had a great time hunting an area that I have never been in before and did ok for an explority run through. Dug two Eagle I coats, one eagle shield cuff, a really nice 1860 Indian head penny, a huge flat button with some design around the edge, a neat lantern wick knob, an umbrella top, some brass square nails, and a bunch of hoganflagles and verpshnyders.

Hope I sized the pic right, still trying to get the hang of paint.

"and a bunch of hoganflagles and verpshnyders."

Hilarious! :laughing9:
Nice bunch of relics there. Congrats on that great looking IH. It's 100 years older than me. ;D
Would you mind posting a closer picture of the large flat button with the design when you get time?
Thanks,
MM

Your wish is my command. Almost looks like little propellers with wings stamped around the edges. You can still see some of the gilt left in the stamping.

Believe me, I was surprised at the shape it was in. I found it at the edge of a field not more than 15 yards from the salt marsh. I guess clay really does a job on stuff since it holds moisture against the relics. The soil here is sandy and well draining and that must be the key.

Thanks Digger. Nice Colonial button. Actually that wick turner looks older than most I've seen too. :icon_scratch:

Just a design

ModernMiner, you practically read my mind! :laughing7: I've never seen a design like that on an oil lamp burner or a lantern burner before.

As ModernMiner stated,"that wick turner looks older than most". I Wonder if it's a "make-do" wheel that replaced a lost one. That wheel looks like it may have started out life as a button, I'd look at the back of it closely for telltale signs of a design. I've had oil lamp burners where the thumbwheel had been lost and an IH penny had been drilled and soldered on to replace it.

What do you think? :icon_scratch:

Dave
