GOLD Cufflinks??

Update in today's post: solid 18k!

Got out to a new spot today. Shortly into the hunt got a set of cufflinks. They were gold colored but couldn't tell much then and there. Packed them up and kept hunting. Also got a sterling bracelet (about 21 grams) and a small sterling ring.

Got home and cleaned the cufflinks. There are no markings but I don't see any flaking or any indications they are plated. Weight is 5 grams exactly. There is a scrape on the back, and it's gold colored all the way through.

Can anyone estimate age of them? I will get them tested as soon as I can, but I'm thinking maybe 14k?

looks like gold to me. hard to say how old, but my first thought was 1850's

Probably 18K or better, based on the color.

OWK, is it possible it is late 19th century, early 20th century? Or could this really date to the 1700s or early/mid 1800s?

Beautiful find ! I'm leaning more toward jewelerguy's date estimate - 1850's (I like a range of 1850's thru 70's ). They don't
look eighteenth century to me - but I am no expert on antique cuff links - just gutting this one out . Nice Find !

( After looking at a larger picture of these - I think they could be much earlier than the aforementioned
1850's - 70's - That detail cut work kinda has me leaning late 18th C/early 19th )

I got to say that I am quite jealous over these spectacular cufflinks. They are most definitely gold and based on the hand work and design of them I would say then are 1780's. You should be very pleased with those. I would suggest that they are banner worthy.

I believe that they are not 18th century; they most likely date to the 19th century - just my opinion. It's still a very impressive find all the same, that anybody would be thrilled to recover. Nearly all the 18th century silver cufflinks that you see on T-Net are octagonal in shape. The round to oval shapes were used into the 19th century and beyond. I have an octagonal-shaped 18th century gold cufflink that was dated by the folks at Colonial Williamsburg. If you Google 18th Century gold cufflinks (images) you will only see one, maybe two true examples; they are very rare as they could only be afforded by royalty and the very wealthy. I could still be wrong. If you want to know for certain, have a jeweler test them. If they come back 9K to 18K, they date to the 19th Century. Jewelers way back in the 18th century would have fashioned gold cufflinks by melting down some gold coins, so a colonial-period specimen will show to be 22K when tested. I hope this helps.
