Gold detectors are special and machines by Whites, Tesoro, Garrett and Minelab will get the job done and giving lots of fun too. Check out the manufactures websites to learn more easier.

Also check on the amount of extra coils available as you will need a few for various areas.

I second Fishers Gold Bug 2 or White's GMT for "finer" gold.

Minelab is better for deep big nuggets I think.

Though note that I only say what I've heard since i have no personal experience with either.

This thing will find very small gold, ask anyone who has used one.

Thanks to all. I have many detectors already and the wife said she wanted a new dining room suit before I got another one, so guess what she got today. So a new detector for me as soon as I find one. Working on number 17.

Minelab for gold from BB size on up. It does not do flake well. The GTX 4000 is the way to go.

I would say GB2 also, but it's best to ask others what works best in your area.

The GMT and the GB II find the smallest shallow gold and do well on fairly deep, big nuggets and specimens. The Lobo Super Traq won't do as well on really small gold, but the Tesoro discriminator is excellent and you can tick it up a little to disc out iron in trashy mining areas. The Minelab PI's are for deeper solid nuggets, nothing goes deeper than a Minelab. But, you will lose small shallow gold, wire gold, and some gold specimens. So, if your in the desert looking for solid nuggets, the Minelab is a great choice. But if you find a nugget patch, it would behoove you to have a backup VLF like the ones mentioned above. Because if you rely only on the PI to find it all, I promise you, you will leave gold there for someone like me to come behind you someday and find. ;D

Thanks guys. all you information has been really helpful. I've been leaning to the GMT or Gold bug II. Probably the GMT.
