Gold Ring!! But don't get too excited...

Alrighty then, last night we went out to a local park and I was detecting around the lake in this park. I got a signal, began digging and you can bet I was happy when this popped out! I thought for a minute, how can this be gold, because I was discriminating out basically everything but coins/silver. Well it turns out that it is gold, but not 100%. It says on the inside "10k gold filled". I don't know what that means, but looking at the corrosion on the outside of this ring I think the outside was copper. And as you can see on the first pic, I began scraping off the green copper and some reddish material was exposed. Ok now for the questions:

Does anyone know what "gold filled" jewlery is?

Can anyone identify what this ring is made of?

Thanks!!! ;D

Nice find and congrats on the gold filled ring, LOL! No help on what it means but it's like elctro plating. HH, Mike

gold filled is thicker than electroplate, I think it is a thin layer of gold that's mechanically rolled onto base metal. It will not wear through under normal use or cleaning. On an old piece with corrosion, that could be another story.

Even solid 10K gold will corrode. If 10K gold is 10/24 or 42% gold, that leaves room for a lot of copper, nickel, and other metals.
