Went back to the beach. Found $2.28 in clad and this gold ring. It's stamped 14k. Looks like an engagement ring. It has 5 very small diamond chips. The largest is on the fitting where the stone should be, only the size of a pin's head. I guess the counter example to the old axiom (if it's a carat she'll wear it) is true in this case.
