I'd highly recommend Howard Crouch's Civil War Artifacts: A Guide for the Historian
Frances Lord's Civil War Collector's Encyclopedia: Volumes I & II (amazon has used for $10.66)
and Steve Sylvia and Mike O'Donnell's Illustrated History of American Civil War Relics

You can try searching www.bookfinder.com for best prices or if you want to sample book first try getting them through your local library on Interlibrary Loan

For buttons these two: "Record of American Uniform and Historical Buttons" by Alphaeus H. Albert and "Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865" by Warren K. Tice

I'd add American Military Button Makers and Dealers; Their Backmarks & Dates by William F. McGuinn and Bruce S. Bazelon to your button book list if you are a digger. I find it a good companion to Alberts.
