That, probably, was the beginning of the end for metal buttons. Dunno much about them. Nice find.

I found a similar looking one with a shank on the back (No button holes) laying on top of the ground in a plowed field that had an old home site and did not know it was rubber so I ran my metal detector over it to see what kind of signal I'd get. Well, as might be expected the detector didn't sound off. I got to thinking that something was wrong with my machine. Did an adjustment or two ,, still nothing so I picked up the button and realized it was hard rubber and not metal. I think mine has a patient date of 1851 as well. I've heard there are C.W. eagle buttons that are rubber too but I haven't seen or found one. Yet.

Cool find for sure.

Some of the black rubber buttons were said to have been Civil War Navy Buttons.
