My granddaughter found this in the creek. It has the texture and look of a landscape pebble. But what's up with this shape? And the different colors? I'm sorry but this is so strange.

Like a cookie crumbles into different shapes and sizes, so do rocks under the natural geologic forces they've been subject to overtime. Not all that sure what it is, but there are many odd shaped rocks that will be found all over world and will standout amongst all the others around it. Sounds like your granddaughter is on the right track of spotting things that are unique and unusual to everything else around it. She'll probably be good at finding Indian artifacts also.?

Bought a few barrels of rocks..trying to figure out what they all are.

Recently I bought 3 1/2 50gallon barrels from a guy who 25 years ago had gotten someone's old rock collection..no idea what some of them are? He said they were collected from all over. I'd love to find out what they all are..some I've cut so you can see them better. these are just a random few I selected.

To lazy to name all those. Research the Chalcedony-group of minerals. That should ID most of them.

Found this about 6” deep. Each round metal piece individually beeps when testing ohms on my voltmeter, none of them are connected either...I checked each one. My neodymium magnet sticks very well to it...it’s def not hematite or magnetite and not slag....please help me figure this one out!!! Found this in my front flower bed buried in about 2 feet of hard MD clay. I find LOTS of rocks/minerals, but this one looked different from the rest.

Yep, she is the one that finds the best rocks. Her twin sister is good with the metal detector.

How do you know it's not magnetite, hematite or slag? Streak test? Will a knife scratch it? Need better pictures.
Also, chip a piece and show the fresh surface.

Hematite magnatite has metal spheres in it? No air pockets. No I needed to cut with my tile/wet saw it’s very hard and the color of dust is light gray

Hard to say. Lots of metamorphic and what appears to be extrusive volcanics there. Its the right conditions..might be a feeder dike nearby.

Ignore that and look at the big picture. We ruled out slag and hematite. So we must still rule out magnetite, perhaps even arsenopyrite.
Will a knife scratch it?

Purple hard rock????

Not sure what this rock is. Seems to be mostly manganese ...well, at least its purple when crushed to powder. Really hard to break even after roasting. Has some iron oxides. Had some pyrite before roasting.
