got advice on gem hunting where I've found before?

So I'm going to be revisiting a spot I've previously been to when looking for gold. Found 2 specks of gold smaller then sand, but I also found something else. Decided to classify 2 gallons and take it up home and try you a new water filled sluice I made. After running it for 5 minutes I see this blood red gem get stuck on the second hill in my water filled sluice. Panned the rest and what's under the black sand? is red felspar sand. Decided to go 10 miles up farther but it goes away from the creek so I decided to pan small run offs. Was raining the day before so the mountain side makes little drainage creeks.
Every pan from every creek showed red felspar minerals.
Is it a hit or miss like gold or can I trace this some how?

Seventh forum down from here is the "geological forum " in it is one for gems, try there if you don't get an answer here
Best if luck with your new find! GL!

You can trace the material just like you would hunting for a lode of gold. Sample pan and classify till you run out of the material or start seeing larger material then narrow your search and do some looming in area's with the larger materials. Good luck.
