I had an amazing week in Gettysburg PA. Hanging out with the locals and the two local Policeman that took me around to different historic sites around the area. Relics were really, really difficult to be found around there. I do not recommend attempting detecting in this town. There are some very good relics hunters who have POUNDED these sites for years. While detecting one morning I had mentioned to Larry Runk (Sargent of Gettysburg police) whom I was detecting with that morning. I said, "you detectorists have it rough around here" He agreed and put it into perspective like this, " you have a 3 day battle, with 140 years worth of relic hunters" Think about it. We detected for two days coming up with some decent lead and a bunch of trash. On the third day I met up with Joe (Civilman) treasurenet.com. Joe is a fine detectorist and knows his history very well, showing me the exact routes troops made standing in the very same lanes. Now that was a treat in itself! Joe and I started detecting a new field in PA where we located some dropped bullets and Joe's first PA campaign Gardner. He has many great relics from the Civil War he has found in the past and was very pleasant to detect with. On my way home I couldn't resist the Colonial era looking home I saw from the expressway in VA. After locating the farmer he agreed to let me detect. After thanking him and leaving him with some 4-h memorabilia, I located the old trash pit in the back of the house digging some cool items that satisfied my detecting craving to complete my week long journey through the Eastern United States. The American Picker fellas ended up digging some decent lead and other CW relics. It was a great experience I plan on doing again real soon. You can see some of the adventures on the History Channel "American Pickers" airing sometime between Jan- March.

Thanks for looking!

Great story and what an opportunity to experience the history. I never really thought about it with the perspective of 3 days of activity, 140 year of folks detecting the remains. Sounds like you had a awesome trip, thanks for posting up.

I'm sure that was a fun trip Mike and I appreciate the emails from you while you were there. I'm also sure that being shuffled around by two policeman was not a new experience for you-LOL. We tend to think about those big battle areas being virgin sites but that's just not true. Good hunt-If you had used a Fisher, you'd have found more-LOL. HH Bud, Quindy.

Nice Photos Mike and you're right. That's the BEST known Civil War battle, even people who know nothing about the War, KNOWS Gettysburg! So I think that the police officer was dead on. You still managed some Civil War saves and got to hunt on some of the most Hallowed ground in the United States, that alone was worth it, the relics are just the cherry on top!! :icon_thumleft:  I really like your "guerilla" style ;D ;D seeing that house from the interstate and doubling back. That sounds like somthing that I'd do too. You can't help it, when its in your blood, its in your blood....and it calls out to you "RELICS HERE!" :laughing9: :laughing9: :laughing9: That's awesome that the farmer gave you the go ahead; that's what its all about and glad to see there's still some neighborly people left in the World!

Congrats on a good hunt, beautiful pictures, and nice story! :icon_thumleft:

I tried to talk to Abe about him, but he just looked at me "stone faced" about it. LOL
It was almost like he had the expression, "I told you so"

I'm glad to see that you had a good trip. Awesome finds :icon_thumleft:. Not to many people get to hunt in Gettysburg. Hope you enjoyed Antietam, it's a beautiful place and I hope you got to see Bloody Lane and the tower. It's my favorite part of the park. You can see miles from that tower and can only imagine how it all came about. Hope the kids enjoy finding the trinkets we donated to the 4-H hunts for the kids. I think it's so great that you all take the time to teach the kids about this great hobby. HH

Re: Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia Digs

I have yet to see Gettysburg and cemetery hill and the peach orchard. It would be a somber journey for sure. Am a couple miles from Chickamauga and it is amazing.
Looks like you had a fun trip Mike, made some good friends and came back with some memorable relics. It always means a lot to know what the battle was even if it is just a bullet but looks like you got more than that.
If anyone wants stats on that three day battle here is a good site.
