Found these little treasures today. The shot gun shell says "PETERS HV 12". It looks old and was found right next to the 1875 Seated Dime. Maybe the hunter lost the dime while pulling out a shell from his pocket 130 years ago? I guess we will never know!! LOL. Happy hunting everyone. Oh, can anyone give me some advice on cleaning the silver coin? Its got some "crud" that is pretty hard to get off and I don't want to damage the coin. Thanks.

Frank, congrats on a nice Seated..and yes, you bring a good point to light...I can see the anxious hunter trying to re-load so he can bag that huge deer, dropping the dime in the process. Not much trophy hunting then, if it's brown, it down! That deer, or whatever quarry he was tracking would feed his family for a good while. Cleaning...im not afraid to clean my finds, Frank...as long as it's not a rare, key date coin. There's plenty of methods, peroxide, baking soda, toothpaste etc...I prefer to do a light cleaning to bring out the details, not going too far. Great find, good luck..Ddf

Thanks for the great info. Its funny, I showed a couple guys at work the coin and shot gun shell and they seemed pretty enthused about the coin but one of the guys asked me why I would take that junky ole shot gun shell home with me. I guess us treasure hunters can see a story or like to figure out why our finds were lost, who lost them, etc. and non-treasure hunters seem to only focus on how much something is worth$$$$. Happy hunting!!!

Nice Seated dime! The Peters headstamp was used from 1887 until 1934 when it merged with Remington.
