Its a stash for safe keeping is my guess. Guy probably died. If it was from a raid you would think one guy would have survived and gone back..
If I got the hits and started digging an Archeologist would not cross my mind. Gold fever in the hole.
Now the government licks its chops wanting its share.

I feel like it was probably a stash as well. Guy sold off some property and didn’t trust banks. Jeff from PA posts a lot about people finding “pots” of gold. This might be one of em.

My guess is a farmer that sold what he grew for $1 ea. Maybe hay? Once the war got going the union was buying and shipping south 200,000 lbs of hay each day. Having access to 1863 double eagles says to me this guy had gov contracts. Just a wild guess on my part.
