Hello! I am so excited to be part of the group! I have read discussions in the forum on and off for a couple of years, and finally decided to join. I'm a teacher and a mom, and I have been detecting with my 10 year old about 2 or 3 times a week ( weather permitting, which makes for a short season in Maine, the time between when the ground thaws and the blackflies arrive, you don't have long!)
I think it's the best thing in the world. Our favorite spot is a turn of the century "dump" on a river bank. We've found 2 quarters one from 1895 and one from 1900. (That was so exciting!) And lots of other oddities.
Thanks for all of the great discussion, I've really learned a lot. Looking forward to learning more!
P.s Anyone seen something like this, or have ideas on what it was used for? It terrifies my kid!!

Welcome from Georgia, looking forward to seeing your future finds (and past if you post them). That picture you posted is interesting, no idea what it could be but cool nonetheless.

Hi Heidi! We seem to have a lot in common! I am a new member. I live in Maine (Downeast.) I teach 3rd grade, or these days try to teach 3rd grade. I also have been lurking on this site for a few years.
It's so cool that you get to share this activity with your child. Your find is a bit creepy looking. Do you think it could have been part of a frame that supported a bowl or tray? I'm picturing a head on each end.
Btw, I was out detecting yesterday around 4 and the little buggers have arrived.
