I replaced the grip on my digging tool, with tennis racket handle wrap.

Rubber, relatively strong, and provides good grip and a little cushioning.

It can be found on eBay

I use shrink tubing that has the adhesive inside. It has been on for over 3,000 hours in water with no signs of wear. It also provides some heat insulation during the winter months in the ocean off of the New England coast. I also use it on my travel scoop. It also provides more slip resistance than the stainless steel has. I am sure it will function just fin on wood as well the stainless steel.

I use kevlar gloves with rubber bottoms. No trouble gripping pole or finds,
