Check the junk yards. You might find a refrigerator/stove shelf or BBQ grill that can be cut to suit your needs.

These things are stupid cheap on amazon. The one I have is about 1/2" spacing

Double up these or what I mentioned above to reduce opening size.

lay them out in a criss-cross to block the bigger flat stones from slipping through!

If you lay them criss-cross I have found that having the "horizontal" behind the "vertical" is the better option ... less hang-ups .

12"x17" ~0.1" welded wire with estimated 0.3" opening. $12.50 Might be a little weak to shovel bigger rocks directly onto, but should be fine to wash dirt over/thru.
