You could electrolysis. I would just steel wool it, and slap some oil on the barrel. They are cool, but super common.

It was fun...At first I thought it was a metal pipe, then I got down to the trigger part. It a second I was freaking out, because I'm thinking a civil war piece. Once I got it out, I knew it wasn't as spectacular, but very cool!

Found this old gun barrel and spoon this morning in woods. Going back out this afternoon

Nice finds. The barrel seems to be from a BB gun. I agree. The spoon can be rather older. I find eating utensils from time to time, but not a rifle or a part so far. I'm right now cleaning an old log splitting wedge I recently found in the woods like 16-18" deep. The thing weights about 5 pounds or so even though is very well rusted. I'm using electrolysis, the best way to clean heavily corroded iron stuff, but also coins. I use a 12V/1 amp battery charger and prepared a simple electrolysis system as indicated here: http://www.dirtyoldcoins.com/restore/electrolysis.html. HH

I was diving at the mouth of Pearl Harbor a few years ago, found a coral encrusted length that looked like a gun barrel, and thought I had a piece of history. Turned out it was a coral encrusted length of galvanized pipe. With a history.

Relics are always fun. Now, make up a story about why you found it where you did. If they aren't valuable, make them interesting.
