Found this the other day at a indian site that ive pulled an awl, Madison point, side scraper, knife, 2 thumb scrapers, mussel shells, burned bone, and many flakes out of in just the past several trips. I'm sure its worked and not a broken rock but I'm not sure what exactly it is. a hand axe or a core are my best guesses but id like to know what you guys think

I think Steve nailed. Someone whacked it a few times. Maybe to test the material to see if it was better inside (test), maybe they kept the flakes (core), maybe they wanted to thin it down into something else (preform.)

great point on the use wear, ive been teaching myself through finding things and ive got tools down. I've started recently looking for less obvious items, grind stones, hammer stones, cores, shaft straightening stones and such. now I know look for use wear among other things.
