Thirty states issued Tax Tokens during the depression. They were used as coins to pay sales tax.

By the end of World War II, most of them were gone. And few people alive today know they ever existed.

Except for us treasure hunters, who dig them up when we are metal detecting.

They came in many different sizes. Some were round with holes in the middle, some were square, some were made of compressed paper, or zinc, or aluminum, or brass or copper. They came in many denominations, and all of them were worth less than a penny.

Learn more about these tax tokens in the latest podcast of In the Treasure Corner, at In the Corner with Dan Hughes.

Here in AZ and NM they were called Mils. I have found lots of them while metal detecting. The one Mils are tiny, much smaller than a dime. I have found a few of the 5 mils also, about the size of a cent, but very thin.
