Hay Cut Field No.4 - Day 2 + Game Strip...

After the recent rain we returned to the hard stoney field to see if we could dig better. We couldn't & only lasted 1 hour. However, Dad got a 1584 Lizzy Hammered Sixpence & a massive Lead Weight. I had very little - a circa 1900 Primrose League Badge & a crappy tin halfpenny.

We then moved to a freshly seeded (sweetcorn) Game Strip - future bird cover. After 10 minutes Dad got his 2nd hammered - Scottish cut half. The pressure was on. It wasn't until the last 30 minutes of our 2 hour hunt that I got a scrappy Roman Silver & I fluked out a hammered on the way back to the car. 2 silvers each Good 3 hour hunt!

That's some real old stuff. I got over to Colchester once, but a return trip is not in the plans. It's a case of "one and done" for me; however, you great posts might change my thoughts.

I went with Chris M. who operates the big Colchester tour. He has access to an enormous amount of land. I went in 2011. I got a beat up Elizabeth six-pence, a very worn Elizabeth groat, and a 1247 silver penny that was chopped in half from plow damage; however; I managed a killer Saxon Sceat on my very first day.

Looking at your find base and the condition of the Roman coinage finds your doing VERY WELL! Thinking of the hours spent in the fields and washing up at the end of the day only wishing there was something remotely close to your posting of finds.
Sometimes the grass looks a little greener on the other side of the fence, it's trying to figure out what side to stand on is the problem.

I got a beat up Elizabeth six-pence, a very worn Elizabeth groat, and a 1247 silver penny that was chopped in half from plow damage; however; I managed a killer Saxon Sceat on my very first day.

It took me about 20 years to get my first sceat, they are a special coin in our history.
