"Head to Head Comparison" yields a special find!

I decided to take my Tesoro Tejon and my Minelab Explorer XS out to my favorite old "hunted-out" fairgrounds for a little 'head to head comparison' shootout. Nothing all that scientific, I just set up both machines the way I usually hunt them:

Tejon - Sens on 10, Threshold down low, Disc 1 set to "Foil", Disc 2 set to "Tabs", Ground balance a little positive, stock coil

Exp XS - Sens on 24 (Manual), Gain 7, Sounds "Ferrous", Iron Mask -14, stock coil

Anyway, I always read about these guys doing head to head comparisons where for some reason they always find more good old coins than I find in a month... ???

So I figured, hey maybe I'll get lucky, if I go out and fool those buried coins into thinking I"m not really looking for them, just doing a harmless "experiment", the coins will let down their guard and stop hiding so much! Well it worked! Sort of! (I got one definite keeper, but not a handful)... It also helps this was in an area of the old fairgrounds I hadn't yet got to w/ a detector ;D

For reference, the area HAD been hit hard w/ 1980's and early 90's detectors.

Depth was 7 inches, and both detectors indicated a solid "GOOD" signal....

Hey! Great coin! I haven't seen one of them in forever.

You're brave doing a side-by-side. PLEASE DO MORE!

A lot machines can't get a solid signal on a quarter at 7 inches. Many will detect one but the signal will break-up or only sound one-way.

No problem for these two powerhouse machines!

Chris
Leave the toning alone there are collectors that only collect toned coins.

nice piece rusted iron, i have 2 fairgrounds that are over 150 years old ,1 in my town and one 17 miles away. in 4 years i only pulled a liberty nickel and the usual junk bottle caps, nails. sometimes i wonder what im missing with my QXT. i know there has to be more, it has been hit hard. CONGRATS!

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm definitely not going to touch the toning on this coin, I like it the way it is. (I never sell my finds, so when I find a silver coin worth less than $20 that has badly lopsided toning, I clean it ;) )

If anybody wants to read the full "head to head comparison" of the Tejon vs. Explorer, it's at
http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php?topic=49358.new;topicseen#new

I didn't try a comparison yet on any coins at super depth (10+ inches)... but for a really true test, you don't know what anything is till you dig them up.... I just got lucky that there was a coin in this test!!!

Anyhow, will save that for another day when I have the time. I do have a wheat penny I found w/ the Tejon at a measured 11 1/2, and a Jefferson nickel at a measured 10 that was down beneath a buried rock.
