I have found a range of impedance from 8 to 600 ohm
is 600 ohm necessarily better than 170ohm?

it will be for a white's classic id 5

possibly MPC MX-300 @ 600 ohm & MPC-SP-5 @ 170 ohm & HA-5 @ 170 ohm & SC7V @ 170 ohm

Match the ohms rating output on the machine, to that of the component/speakers/headphone ohms rating. I think it's best to match all components with each other. I do believe that the lower the ohms, the more fidelity you’ll get. Less resistants is better and ohms are a measure of resistants.

I had been using 32ohm on my minelab for over a year an about 3 months ago I bought a set with 52ohm an the diffrence in sound is night an day, I had to turn the voulume way down, I can also pick out the deeper targets much better at the beach now. trying taking your machime somewhere were they sell headphones an see if they will let you try a few diffrent 1. I have tried a about 6 diffrent sets over the past 2 months an everyone sounds diffrent, but I like the 52 ohm best.

First, welcome to the forum, ne-mo.
Second, check out the website EDDE gave you and go to the tech page there. That guy gives you all the info you'll need to understand the impedance for each manufacturer and how to match it. This is the guy that makes RAT Phones which are some of the very best available and at a good price. I bought a pair for my Tesoro detectors and am supper satisfied.

All you have to do is get headphones that match the ohms output on the machine. It’s not that complicated, just look at the information plate on the machine. It should state the ohms rating. Note that some components have a variable ohms rating.

The headphones are rated in ohms too and all you have to do in match the two. Then it will come down to quality and how much you want to spend. Do you want to dry a Corvette, or a Neo?
