Ok so ive seen these posted on the forums over the last few years and i understand that these werent issued by either side for the civil war, but what i have not seen is a picture of one with a patent on it and i think i have one here. Can someone let me know if they have any more info on this based on these markings? It fades toward the end but it looks like it reads: PAT.APD.F08

Let me know if this helps anyone with dating or not, just curious to see if anyone out there knows anymore about the markings. Also, i found a bell at the same site, curious as to any info i can get out of that. Thanks, Gavin.

Patent Applied "For" is what is says.

The bell is a crotal bell, used on horses, to signal their approach.

Nice finds from the old days. GL&HH.
