Looks more like it was riveted onto a strap of leather . Looks like a keeper hole for the other end.

Nope, its from the side of a bucket or vessel. 2 of them to hang it over the fire. (Metal cooking pot hanger)

Cru is spot on - definitely from a large pot or kettle. An eyelet like this was riveted on both sides to accept the 2 ends of the handle.
