Hello folks, newbie here up in Quincy, Massachusetts. My own kids long
since gone and my two step sons in college with my younger wife working
and going to school I'm bored to death! For the past few years off and on
I have been looking at metal detecting for a hobby and now I think I am
ready to dive in and see what happens. All kinds of questions for you folks,
what kind of equipment should I start with? Should I ease into it at the
beginning? School me folks. I thank you kindly

Welcome namvet!
I started this hobby last spring with a $100 detector. You don't need to spend tons of money to get started. All detectors will find the goods. If you find the hobby isn't for you, then you're not out alot of dough. Just make sure to really get to know your machine, and understand what its telling you.
Also, dig tidy holes and fill them neatly.
.... Like you were never there. Good luck and happy hunting!!!!

You might consider browsing Sub-Forums: Massachusetts for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state.

Welcome to Treasurenet! You have a lot of choices depending on where you plan to search and what type of targets you desire. I'd recommend you buy a mid priced machine if it's in the budget. You have a lot of colonial history under your ground. We have a "new to the hobby" page on our website that has some equipment tips
