I was out yesterday on a 40s era home site in a rural agricultural area and dug up about 14ft of brass or copper chain.
Anyone have any idea what the intended use would have been?

I've seen chain like that used to hang fluorescent light fixtures.

I have used it for hanging fluorescent fixtures and also for fishing walls for wiring, phone and electrical.

I've also seen that type of cut to a short length and attached to a padlock. The chain is then bolted to a door so that it doesn't get misplaced.

I've also seen those chains attached to the weights in a grandfather clock... I agree with all the other uses posted also. This type chain has been used for many different purposes.

It really was an all purpose chain. Could have been used for just about anything.

Thanks to all that responded.
From the dimensions listed online, my chain is #50 size with a safe working load of 225lbs.
To me, it looks like it might be bronze and not brass. The closest size I could find a price for online was #40 size bronze at $4.30 a ft. At that price, my 14ft. chain would have a value of more than $60. Not a bad recovery.
