Thank you all... I'm completely uneducated in this field but trying to learn... If anyone has the patience to break it down to Kindergarten level for me to understand a few things, I would be very grateful. Basically, i have had this tucked away safely for years, completely unaware it could be anything more than a rock.. It is very special to me bc it was a gift from the man who raised me until he died 25 years ago. I have read articles and multiple forums now trying to grasp a basic understanding of a celt and other artifacts... I'm learning I just want to understand what I have been holding onto... What kind of material, how old, made by who for what use? Is it valuable at all?
A celt is the stone form of a modern metal axe or hatchet.
The grooved axe came before the celt in the evolution of the stone tool in North America.
Your piece in my opinion would be considered a woodland period Artifact and is likely well over a thousand years old maybe two thousand and change.
The material yours is made from looks to me like basalt
