Help me decide...

I can't decide if ....

1. I am so addicted to MD'ing that I hate missing a day or

2. I am just a dedicated MD'er or

3. I am just plain nuts!

I was out there this morning in the cold rain. No thunder or lightening but the rain was cold. I only went to a small beach near home. I only hunted for an hour and a half. As long as I was in the water I was just fine but as soon as I got into shallow water I was cold. What a nut! I covered the whole area because the tide was out so there wasn't much water to hunt. My total finds for the day..... 1 penny, 1 dime, 2 bottle caps and 1 cheap hoop earring.

Ah well... maybe I am nuts but I had a good time anyway. My husband already thinks I'm nuts for doing this in the first place but doing it in the rain????? Well I just come back that he used to play golf in the rain. ;D

hey I was out in the rain sunday and loved it, it made everyone else on the beach scatter for cover. No lighting so I just kept on swinging.

I was out in the rain too. I got soaked and started to get very cold. I think it's called dedication. My wife thinks I'm nuts though.

It's an addiction, ask me, I know.
At the age of 71 you would think I'd want to take naps all day.
The excitement of seeing sparkle in my scoop sure as hell is better then doing yardwork.

I think it is an addiction that has no cure.  It only gets worse with time, especially when you find gold things.

Look at it this way:

1 -  it's a hobby that pays for itself over time

2 - it keeps you out of trouble

3 - what else would you be doing at that time (me watching TV, I know how productive)

4 - you like it

5 - imagine getting into another hobby that is really boring and you have to keep funding it with more and more money

Think of it as a good addiction.  There are many of us that post here or browse here that are in the same shoes as you.

What about #4........Happy :O)

(ok no B.S. yea its number three)
I have been out there when it was like 30degrees.

going to northern michigan this week and taking wetsuit with xtra coverup shorty....and going to test the waters.
no one gets in the water up there with detectors.....too rich of an area and the rest of the people that live there year around are poor fishermen or locals that have other things to do in the spring and summer (which only last a minute or two anyway.)

so getting in 45degree water? yea #3.....hunting in rain...ditto

Hi Mumszie,

I've always liked that movie's title: "Magnificent Obsession" ...yeah I think it's kinda like that.

I've detected some deep beach cuts in the pouring rain and really, really enjoyed it. BUT my wife just shook her head when I got home thoroughly soaked and a big smile on my face.

I sort of admire the couples who can do it together but my spouse has absolutely no desire to even try. So there you go. I must admit though that she is highly tolerant of me and my "obsessions".

That describes it perfectly and I liked that movie too! My husband is like your wife. He just can not understand it but I remember him and his brother going out in all kinds of weather to play golf! HEH HEH HEH He is also tolerant of my "obsessions". I am a lucky woman!

I've decided that metal detecting is very much like casino gambling - lose track of time, spend hours for little results, keep thinking that the next hit/hill/hole/beep/clump of dirt is going to be the big one, and every once in a while, it actually is. And when you wake up with a plan to gamble, or md, you feel like a kid again, antsy to go off and play.

There is ONE big difference, though, and that is that metal detecting doesn't cost you $50 an hour to be entertained. Excluding equipment, a bit of gas and parking is all it takes. So, if you're going to have an addiction, its the one to have.

Well to be blunt honest, i would say #2 or #3

Its not like it use to be 20+ years ago the finds were easy and hardly NO competition on the beaches.

To me that does make it a lil harder to motivate myself to go out there.

But this hobby, hate calling it that cause this is one of my full time jobs, but hate calling it a job cause what can you do in life that brings you happiness so cheap.

Each piece of junk you pull up is perhaps one less piece some child will step on and cut/pierce/stub there foot on.

What else can you do where the area is full of eye candy, yeah that goes for the gal detectorest also, us guys aren`t the only ones looking at the opposite sex out there.

What else can you do that helps u stay healthy, or helps you to get healthy.

What else can you do that each beep brings a rush of adrenaline over the prospects of what is it.

Finally, what can you do that although time consuming has the chance to pay you back in finds while still enjoying all of the above.

So naa your not nuts.....................
