It was a button day, short 1 hour hunt produce 3 confirm buttons, 2 flat, and 1 military, and that octagonal shape item, looks like it was a place for a shank. Do u think it's a button, all items dug within a couple feet from each other, confirm buttons were 4-6 inches deep, the mystery item was deeper at 8 inches, the rest are a crucifix, a religious medal, 1893 iHP, and a partial silver thimble.

Most octagonal "buttons" are really mid 18th century cufflinks. But yours is too big to be a cufflink, so it must be a button.

Agreed, these 18th C buttons must have matched the smaller cufflinks.

Hi I'm not sure, its very crusty looking, it seems copper, but I'm just guessing.
I really don't know how to tell metals apart, I see here people always know what metal they
Just dug, like lead, brass, ect, any suggestions.

That was the first thing that came to my mind, but it's rather thin and not very strong, u can see its bent, and
Taking the fact that it was in the same area as the flat buttons, but deeper I would say it predates them, also the age of the metal suggest as stated before that it's a mid 1700s button, but i could be wrong.

I d say it is safe too assume that is a button. Nice one and finds.

Check it with a magnet. Won't stick to brass or copper. You can also scratch it with something and see what color it is. Brass will be gold color and very hard.

It was a gilt copper-alloy, at one point. They also do this size in tombac as well.
