Help on condition

Hey everyone. Just found this 1943 D war nickel in a roll. I didn't even notice it since it didn't have the usual blueish black tint most worn war nickels have. The pictures don't really do it justice. The obverse is amazing with full hair and eyebrows. The reverse however has some scratches. There are full steps however. Most likely someone dropped it before putting it in the roll. Ugh. Can anyone give me a good estimate on the grade of this coin? Thanks!!!

I would probably do a MS63 (rim nicks) obverse and a MS60 reverse due to the scratches. Just my opinion however.

Thanks! I'm not really familiar with guessing grades. I tried using the PCGS photo grade guide but couldn't make an accurate assumption.

Too many gashes, scratches, and rim nicks to muster a MS 60 grade. It would be a solid AU. By the way, it isn't full steps. In order to count as a full step, the line must not be interrupted from left to right. The absolute best strike will have 6 full steps, and then 5, 4, and so on.

In my opinion maybe it would grade at the highest # XF or the lowest # AU because of those r-nicks & rev, scratches . Could it have been cleaned ?

Doesn't look cleaned.

Definitely not cleaned. Just a fresh scratch on the reverse

I agree! There is wear on Jefferson's hair above and behind the ear and due to the nicks and scratches on the Reverse as well as the broken (not FS) steps, I would give it an AU-55 to possibly AU-58.
