The Hapsburg Shield appeared on cobs minted during the reign of the Hapsburg kings beginning with Philip II (1556-1598) and ending with Charles II (1665-1700). So this coin would have been minted in one of the year ranges 1556-1598 (PII) or 1598-1621 (P III) or 1621-1665 (P IV).

Some history:
The reason the Spanish Reales are often found at historic sites in the US is that during colonial days in the U.S., the silver Ocho Reales coin, referred to as the Spanish milled dollar, piece of eight, or eight bits, was the principal coin in circulation. This coin and its fractional parts, the half, one, two, and four Reales, were legal currency until February 21, 1857 in the U.S.

Re: Help: Spanish Cob / 4 Reale / Year ?

Hello again, Im unable to locate another 4 reales with the same castle design as is on my coin. Does anyone have any resources they can provide to help me locate additional information, or another coin with the same castle design. Is this 4 reale rare, or am I just not looking in the right places? Dagfoto believes it to be a Bolivia 4 reales (P-B) Assayer Juan Baesteros Narvaez, Dots in margin date it to his third period as assayer circa 1581-1586. Thanks for your time. Gary
