Hi,

I have a Hero Glass Works Mason jar where PATENT is misspelled on the jar. The "E" in PATENT is clearly backwards on the jar. Is this something that anyone has seen before? Thanks.

Thank you for clarifying. I did not know that term in relation to printing.

People making molds weren't always educated or necessarily literate. A mistake that happened from time to time.

Interesting. Can you point to some other examples of typography mistakes in glass molds? Thanks.

I'll try to get a picture tonite but I dug a Honesdale Mineral Water bottle where the "PA" from Honesdale, PA is written on the bottle "A backwardsP". The guy making the mold made a mistake in making the mold as you had to make the mold with everything backwards.

Here are the pics. You can see what I was talking about on the reverse. All in all doesn't seem like a well executed mold in general haha. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1460423504.573080.jpg ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1460423523.337633.jpg

Very cool jar you got, and yes misspellings and dyslexia did happen.

Mold cutting errors were very common back then, even the A and the two T's on your jar are backwards, you didn't even notice. Happens a lot with O's and W's too, I have at least a dozen examples in my collection, maybe more....
