Hi Everyone, I'm new here, and I have a question!

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for reading this. I'm new to here and to using my detector, so please bear with me. I've found lots of coins with my detector, but they are often very dark brown and look nasty. How do I get the dark color off the coins, in a "mass" way (i.e. 30-40 at a time)? Is there an inexpensive, quick, and effective way? I've heard of electrolysis as a way to do it. Thanks for any help with what must be an elementary issue for most of you.

Check the dates. If they are clad, and no good dates, in other words, spending change, get a small rock tumbler. Put some natural aquarium gravel and water and a drop of detergent with the coins and tumble about 15 minutes. Gets the brown right off. Do not mix pennies in with other denominations and DO NOT use on silver coins.

Hi "Jeff of pa" and "Smokey the Cat", thanks for your inputs, both of which coincide together. Any place you know of that offers rock tumblers at a reasonable price?

OK, Jeff, I'll get it right soon enough! Thanks for the warm welcome. It's cold in Chicago, but if/when it gets warm enough this December, I'll see what I can find around here. Coins everywhere, unbelieveable, but like everyone else, I'd like to fine gold jewelry!!!!

Welcome aboard! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forums: Select Your Area.... and selecting your state for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country).

Or the two drum one from Harbor Freight for about $49!
One drum for the silver coins and the other for the coppers as the copper will color the other coins!
Use salt and vinegar in the tumbler (just add enough to cover the coins with the solution) tumble for 30 minutes and you are done! This is for clad!
Good luck and HH!

If they're clad I wouldn't worry about the schmutz on them, they're still legal tender, spend them!

I got my rock tumbler for 5 bucks at a flea market. It was used, probably some kid got it for Christmas and got bored with it. I also have a vibratory cleaner I use for cleaning brass cartridge cases for reloading that works well on dirty coins.
