Went back to the farm in Winchester, Va that I hit the other day and found a crap load of cw bullet casings but none of the bullets! Today that changed! I went back to the same spot, but went in a different direction this time and I hit the jackpot on bullets. I think I figured out which way they marched and where they may have had a campsite or a small skirmish. I found a nice eagle button, but it had a unfortunate death by a plow. Can someone I.D. what's in the 4th picture? Enjoy and happy hunting.

Yep, cap or cartridge box finial, the little thing the slot in the leather lid flap would snap down over. Exellent hunt.

You are definintely walking the same ground as Yankee cavalrymen did about 148 years ago (probably 1864). A lot of those bullets were once dropped Spencer cartridges that were unfortunately separated from the casings by the plow. If you were hunting in the woods, some of them may have been intact. Have fun and good luck!

You are at the site of a late-war camp. The bullets are all drops, and there is camp lead mixed in. No signs of a skirmish there.

Great stuff!

Looks like a nice Union Cav camp. I hope a plate of some C buttons show up. Spencers are tough to dig intact. Good finds.

The "C" button in my avatar came from the same farm but in the next field over. I found that in an unplowed field in some tall grass next to the woods. I did a little happy dance with that one.
