thanks uncle mac,i thought so too, but i saw one on the other site that looked like mine, they called it hopi too.i had it full of broken points maybe ill just fill it back up
hi NCPeaches,im not sure now since someone told me it might be a hopie basket,it caught my eye at an estate sale awhile back i do not think it is ancient but it could be just a work basket they made in the 1900;s or so.i must of had ten pounds of brokes in it so i took them out just in case.i saw one, though not as big on another site made the same way as this one so it could be they would flip corn with it i guess.i liked t as a flint keeper as i could see many brokes in it as i would try to put some back togethor.
What you have here my friend is an excellent example of a Hopi Chaffing basket, the grain heads would be placed in the basket and the grain would be "Tossed" up into the air and any slight breeze would carry the out husks or chaff away, the motion is similar to a Cook flipping food in a skillet.
ah,thank you JRedHorse.i thought it was special when i saw it at the sale, sounds strange but i thought i saw something floating above it when i seen it for the first time.it now has a nice home.thanks again my friend.
